Javier Rosell was born in Barcelona, Spain, in June 1959. He received the Ingeniero de Telecomunicación and Doctor Ingeniero de Telecomunicación degrees in 1983 and 1989, respectively, both from the Polytechnic University of Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona, Spain.

He is currently Professor at the Department of Electronic Engineering and at the Biomedical Research Center of the UPC where he is the head of the Biomedical Instrumentation group.

His current research interest is focused in non-invasive measurement methods in the medical and biological fields, in particular, based on electrical impedance tomography and magnetic induction spectroscopy

Research and development

My main interest is focused on the design of instrumentation equipment. Particularly, in the development of electrical impedance methods and systems for industrial and medical applications. Main contributions have been in hardware design for Electrical Impedance Tomography and in magnetic induction spectroscopy methods.

I have been head researcher in the following projects:

Awards and grants

In October 1986 "Gran Premio Tribuna del Inventor Innovador" from the most important electronics spanish magazine (Mundo Electrónico) for the design of an impedance meter.

In 1988 a grant from the Catalan Government (CIRIT) to develop methods for measuring electrical impedances.

Award to the best Doctoral Thesis of the Telecommunications School in 1989.

In 1992 "Premi a la creativitat" from the Association of Industrial Engineers of Catalonia for our developments on Electrical Impedance Tomography systems.

In 1993 an award from the Barcelona Council "Premi Ciutat de Barcelona 1992" for the development of an Electrical Impedance Tomography System.

In 1993 a grant from the Spanish DGICYT for a stage in Madison-Wisconsin to study monitoring systems to detect apnea in neonates.

In 2004 a grant from the Spanish DGICYT for a stage in the Technical University of Graz to investigate on Magnetic Induction Techniques.
